Artist Statement

Within the world of my own imagination, there is a mythical reality. Deriving inspiration from the notion of the organic order of life, this separate world is materialized. I am drawn to the divine harmony that exists in nature and fascinated by the grotesque and brutal interplay between creatures. In order to actualize this menagerie, I use drawing as a way to take stimulus from the natural world and transform it into something else entirely.

My work is a fragment from another non-reality, with its own symbologies and cosmos that the viewer is subject to uncover. This may look like a collection of alien artifacts where each specimen and scene has its own function – perhaps it is a fungi that produces a psychedelic sap that can be harvested and consumed for recreation, or it is a mating ritual between species. The sculptures are playful, bright yet naturalistic, and the drawings serve to confuse and inform placing the viewer within a larger narrative.

The space between disgust and curiosity, what is known and what is inferred, judgement and wonder, these are the paradoxes that inform my sculptures.  My work is centered around conversations and play with materials; attempting to harness them to create a confusing and perhaps disturbing experience. The viewer is challenged to inspect and interact with this world that they have happened into.
